History of Martin & Frost

Leading

After nearly 30 years' service as a highly successful manager of the Royal Blind society,
at the age of 58 William Martin started upon a new career.

He opened his shop and factory at 121 George Street, with the promise that customers may rest assured
no effort will be spared to render this the leading bedding house in the city”.

Helpful

In its early years, the firm specialised in bedroom furniture and bedding, all manufactured at the Roseburn factory. Martin's soon became known as the bedding specialists in Edinburgh and even produced its own range called 'Rest Specialists'.

The family’s expertise continued through the generations and in the 1950s the founder’s grandson - also called William - featured on the radio giving helpful advice to listeners on how to achieve a good night's sleep.

Respected

It was not long before Martin & Son became a well established and respected name in Edinburgh.
As the company grew, it increased its offering to cover all sorts of household furnishings. Some of the company’s
more unusual commissioned work included a large boardroom table for the Bank of Scotland’s head office on the
Mound and a unique Nepalese carpet specially designed for Holyrood Palace.

In 1974 Martin & Son took over the long established furnishers, Robert Frost & Son. The two businesses complimented
each other and resulted in the expansion of the shop on George Street under the new name of Martin & Frost.
After a period of time at McDonald Road in Edinburgh, Martin & Frost moved to a new purpose-built home
at Fort Kinnaird, which is where they remain today.
